GE previews new high-efficiency traction motor for hybrid and electric

GE previews new high-efficiency traction motor for hybrid and electric vehicle applications

by Jack Rosebro

General Electric engineers have successfully tested a prototype hybrid and electric vehicle motor with a peak power level of 55 kW and the ability to operate continuously at up to 105 ?C (221 ?F), using conventional transmission fluid as the motor?s sole cooling agent.

The motor?which GE says is 3 to 5% more efficient than existing motors could potentially extend the range of a plug-in vehicle?was developed as part of a $5.6-million US Department of Energy (DOE) project, and performs well over a range of bus voltages, from 200V to 650V.

The permanent-magnet motor uses a concentrated (solenoidal) winding, and is extremely compact, with a stator diameter of approximately 23.4 cm (9.2 inches), and a length, including end turns, of approximately 13 cm (5 inches). Power density is about twice that of today?s motors, according to GE.

The motor can use a transaxle?s fluid to cool both the rotor and the stator, producing a continuous 30kW of output over a range of 2,800 to 14,000 rpm at 105 ?C.

Alternately, the motor can use a hybrid vehicle?s engine coolant to limit operating temperature, rather than a separate, dedicated coolant loop, GE Senior Engineer of Electric Machines Ayman El-Refaie noted that many current production motors are limited to a continuous temperature of 65 ?C (149 ?F).

GE also developed new high-resistivity magnets for the motor, which reduce magnetic losses and reduce or eliminate the need to use more costly segmented magnets.

General Electric has discussed licensing the motor technology with electric motor manufacturers as well as automakers, and hopes to see commercial application in the automotive sector by 2015.

?This technology is scalable and flexible enough that it can be leveraged in a number of capacities,? commented El-Refaie, noting that GE plans to explore additional potential product applications, including higher efficiency industrial motors, high-speed oil and gas compressor motors, and generators for aerospace applications.

Next steps include a four-year project, during which time GE engineers will seek to produce a motor with similar performance characteristics, yet with no rare-earth magnets.

Ryan Lochte Girlfriend: Blair Evans?

It's the number-one question being asked at this year's Olympics.

How many times will NBC cameras find Kate Middleton in the crowd? No, that's not it.

Does Ryan Lochte have a girlfriend?

Ryan Lochte Photo

Following his Gold Medal-winning performance in the 400 Individual Medley (which was followed by Lochte getting outkicked on the anchor lap of his team's relay yesterday), the athlete has positioned himself as the American face of these London Games.

And women around the country are yearning to know: is anyone out there sucking that face?

The answer appears to be a strong... maybe. According to The Brisbane Times, Lochte and Australian swimmer Blair Evans were spotted getting awfully chummy during training last week. They reportedly touched hands under the water and left together for the Olympic village.

And we all know what goes down in the Olympic Village, right, Hope Solo?!?

We'll stay on the story of whether or not anyone is staying on (or under) this 28-year old star, but in the meantime, we've posted a photo of that famous Ryan Lochte grill. Ogle away, ladies!

Putting together a language - Teo-Education.Com

From construction and spelling to connotations and speech sounds, English is a language that is perplexing yet beautiful.

IN this final article on grammatical terminology, reference is made to the definitions of a number of studies that are conducted into particular aspects of the English language.

Semantics

Semantics is the study of meaning in language, ie. the meanings of speech forms, especially the development and changes in meaning of words and word groups.

Semantics study how the meanings, connotations, implications and ambiguities of words and concepts in language are created, determined and varied by the use and inter-relationships of words, phrases and sentences.

Semiotics

Semiotics is the study and analysis of signs and symbols in communication, eg. body language.

Phonology

Phonology is the study of the pattern or system of speech sounds in languages.

Phonologists study phonemes, ie. vowels and consonants as well as prosody (rhythm, stress and intonation).

Phonology is often included as part of phonetics but also as a separate and distinct, linguistic study.

Orthography

Orthography is the study of accepted or traditional correct spelling, ie. correct according to usage.

It also studies how the letters or symbols of the alphabet are arranged or occur sequentially in words.

Besides that, the study also includes the relationship between sounds and symbols, and symbol combinations.

Troops, students to fill empty seats at Olympics

LONDON -- Organizing chief Sebastian Coe says troops and local students will be given tickets to fill empty seats at Olympic venues.

There has been widespread criticism after blocks of prime seats went unused Saturday, largely by Olympic and sports officials. Coe, head of the London organizers, predicts this will be sorted out as the games go forward.

He declines to blame Olympic sponsors, whom he had promised to "name and shame" if they did not use their ticket allocations. Coe says it is normal at the Olympics for national team officials to be too busy to attend events in the opening days.

Coe's organizing team has long promised to fill venues, avoiding the problem of empty seats at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

SEC says Chinese firm illegally traded on oil deal

(AP) ? The Securities and Exchange Commission said Friday that it froze assets of Hong Kong traders who bought stock in a Canadian company before a firm owned by the Chinese government announced plans to buy it this week.

The SEC said Friday that Well Advantage Limited and other traders used accounts in Hong Kong and Singapore to make over $13 million trading shares in Canadian oil and gas company Nexen Inc. based on inside information.

China's CNOOC Ltd. Oil company announced plans to buy Nexen on Monday for $15.1 billion.

Zhang Zhi Rong, a billionaire Hong Kong businessman, controls Well Advantage, according to the SEC. The agency said he also runs another company that has a "cooperation agreement" with CNOOC.

The SEC said it moved to freeze the assets shortly after Well Advantage tried to sell all of its Nexen stock.

Stocks are less alluring for today's young investors ...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. The tech bubble wiped out Tyler Sadlow?s first foray into the stock market. He had invested $100 in 1999 with his grandfather?s help.

?We put it all in Level 3 Communications. ? So we lost all that money,? said Sadlow, who is working on a graduate degree in accounting. ?It was a lot of money for me.?

Tough lesson for a 10-year-old, and one the Lenexa, Kan., resident remembers at 23. When he returned to the stock market last fall, Sadlow decided to take on less risk than an adviser recommended. That meant less money in stocks.

Many young investors ? confronting lousy markets and Wall Street scandals ? aren?t embracing the stock market as eagerly as their predecessors did. Others, caught in the economic malaise with low-paying jobs or no job at all, simply don?t have money to invest.

The millennial generation has faced a tougher road starting out than most. ?That kind of 18-to-34 group, all they?ve known in their lives is crisis. It?s tech bubble. It?s 9/11. It?s financial crisis. It?s housing bubble,? said Dan Berman, who manages the two Charles Schwab investment offices in the Kansas City area. ?As much as they understand the power of investing, all they?ve had is negative reinforcement.?

Older investors have the benefit of knowing better times when risk meant reward. Many also own at least a budding start on their golden years to nurture. So far, the evidence on young Americans suggests an undecided generation, teetering at the market?s edge.

A mutual fund industry survey showed Americans younger than 35 have turned away from investment risks more since 2008 than older groups have.

And a May survey by Charles Schwab found that 29 percent of young investors were planning to pull money out of the stock market compared with only 11 percent of older investors.

Berman said young investors are willing to open savings accounts at Schwab. But many have shied away from risking money in the stock market. ?You hear the fear,? he said.

But all Americans? investing confidence has taken a hit.

Larry Cohen, director of Strategic Business Insights in Princeton, N.J., has been asking Americans for their financial opinions every two years for decades. In a 2010 survey, more than 60 percent of respondents agreed with the statement, ?The stock market is too risky for me.? That was more than in any year since 1990.

The 2010 survey also showed all age groups ? from 20-somethings through 60-somethings ? grew far more confident during the stock market?s heady run until 2000 and became equally cautious by 2010. Data from millions of 401(k) accounts show that young investors remained willing in 2010 to stuff their retirement plans at work with stocks, even as older workers backed away from the market.

Much rides on young Americans? decision to invest. Starting early would give them the easiest path to retirement. But if they reject the stock market, they stand the risk of retiring wholly unprepared.

Their collective decision may weigh on older generations, too. Without young investors in the market, older investors would find fewer potential buyers. And that could mean potentially lower prices when they need to sell stocks as retirement approaches.

With the stakes so high, many are worried about youth?s ultimate choice. ?We?re at risk of losing an entire generation of investors,? John Thiel, head of private banking and the investment group at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, told an industry conference in April.

Reluctance to invest is less of an issue for some young investors than dealing with the financial stresses of a bad economy, said Stewart Koesten, of KHC Wealth Management in Overland Park, Kan.

Work is scarce. Unemployment tops 14 percent among Americans between 20 and 25. And those lucky enough to find that first job are just setting up. They?ve got car payments and rent; they need a rainy day fund. Add a big student loan payment, and maybe nothing?s left for a nest egg.

Financial advisers recognize that nest eggs are an early victim in the extreme budget battles that many in this generation face.

Their ability to invest is further threatened by an explosion in student loans ? which means a future of debt payments. The federal government has originated $1.3 trillion in new student loans since mid-2009, a June report from Wells Fargo Securities said.

Tanya Sherman figures her student loans, if they came due now, would put an end to her investing plans. Only 22, Sherman has had an Edward Jones investment account for more than three years. A little bit of every paycheck she earned at a call center job went into that account while she attended Kansas State University. The call center closed, and Sherman ended up leaving school. Now, she?s a year into her new job and finishing her education online.

After the rent, bills and car payment, Sherman figures there still should be enough to restart the Edward Jones investing. Maybe cut down on expensive makeup. ?If I had to make the student debt payment, on top of my car? Absolutely not. I would be in the negative,? she said.

USA Women's Basketball Beats Croatia 81-56 At London Olympics

LONDON -- Tina Charles scored 14 points and Angel McCoughtry added 13 to lead the U.S. women's basketball team to a sloppy 81-56 victory over Croatia on Saturday in their Olympic opener.

Coach Geno Auriemma had said he was hoping that the Americans could play a style of basketball that would be entertaining and help grow the game internationally. That didn't happen Saturday as the U.S. struggled for the first three quarters before pulling away to win their 34th consecutive Olympic contest.

The victory was far different than the 54-point pounding the Americans gave Croatia a week earlier.

Despite missing its first 14 shots, Croatia hung tough for the first 30 minutes before the Americans finally could pull away.

The U.S., which has dominated its opponents en route to the last four gold medals, only led 53-49 early in the fourth quarter before a 16-0 run put the game out of reach.

WTO sets date for MC9 meeting in Bali, Indonesia

The Indonesian island of Bali is to be the venue of next World Trade Organization inter-ministerial meeting, the international trade arbiter said.

The decision to hold the ninth Ministerial Conference (MC9) in the first week in December 2013 was decided by the WTO General Council meeting in Geneva on July 25-26.

Making the announcement late Friday, chair of the General Council Ambassador Elin Johansen of Norway thanked Indonesia for its "kind offer", which she said was "a clear sign of its commitment towards this organization".

Members would discuss the precise dates of MC9 after the summer break, Johansen added.

Representatives from Indonesia said that in the face of the global economic crisis the inter-ministerial meeting could galvanise and strengthen international trade.

It could also help relaunch negotiations on the stalled Doha accords, which focus on dismantling obstacles to trade for poor nations, Indonesia said.

"In the situation where crisis is still hampering the global economy, Indonesia continues to believe that the multilateral trading system has a significant role in fostering a fair global trade, sustaining the world economic growth, eradicating poverty and creating job opportunities," its delegation said.

"In this regard, the next MC9 will therefore be very important to re-energize the negotiation process and the progress achieved so far, and to strengthen the multilateral trading system."

It said Indonesia also hoped the exotic ambiance, the warm weather and the hospitality of the people of Bali "will rejuvenate and renew the constructive spirit" of the Doha negotiations.

The Doha round of global trade talks began in 2001 but have been dogged by disagreement, including how much the United States and the European Union should reduce farm aid and the extent to which emerging market giants such as India and China should cut tariffs on industrial products.

The Ministerial Conference is the highest decision-making body of the WTO and meets approximately every two years. The last one was held in Geneva in December.

How to fit a roller blind - North Leeds Plumbing & Heating

Roller blinds are an excellent choice of window covering for bathrooms and separate WCs.? They can be fitted inside the window recess, or outside so that it lies flush to the wall.? Make sure there is enough space if fitting inside the recess as there needs to be space at either end for ease of movement.

When fitting the brackets, make sure they are level and mark the screw holes with a pencil.? If fitting outside the window recess, the brackets need to be fitted about 50mm above the top of the recess.

For a wall you will need to use a power drill and then insert wall plugs so that the screws can be inserted. Wood will usually only require you to make a small starting hole in it prior to screwing the bracket in place.

If the blind is the correct size straight from the packet great, if not carefully measure the space between the brackets and cut the blind to match.? Fit the winding mechanism and end plug and then mount the blind into the brackets, ensuring the winding mechanism is on the side most suitable for you.

Use Surveys That Pay To Create An Internet Income Stream | Make ...

Article by Melahn Vosika

Is it really possible to make cash from home with surveys that pay?

Can?t companies get free volunteers? Do they really need to extend money to get enough participants? Is it all a scam?

Here?s the truth: every day, businesses offer thousands of surveys that pay, no matter the industry. They all require this key data: Wal-Mart, Amazon, Ebay and many others consistently offer surveys that pay.

These companies conduct surveys for cash because every sample of data they can find is money to them, and if they don?t, their rivals will. And if they want it done right, a cash prize will do it each time.

While the businesses have some overhead associated in giving surveys for pay, the consumer knowledge generated more than makes up for it. Paying partakers ensures that there will be enough participants, and it also boosts the possibility of candid answers.

In the era prior to the internet, companies conducted intricate market research events, compensating partakers for their time and their travel-related costs. These were expensive events, with allowances into the millions each year, but they still proved to be worthwhile investments for the companies that conducted them.

The majority of paid market research happens online at present, which saves companies millions of dollars, while also growing the sums allocated for online surveys that pay.

If you desire to make a reliable income from home, surveys that pay are one of the best chances.

There are certain tips you have to be familiar with if you want to make the most out of surveys that pay. Although you are not likely to earn a killing from the start, these suggestions will get you on the correct path.

How much you earn with surveys for money depends mostly on your temperament and how committed you are. You should treat surveys that pay like a job or a business if you want to make real money. Even if the first few surveys for money you take pay you only a few dollars, take as many as attainable to get yourself started.

As you make new accounts on survey websites that pay, you should make a new email address or a collection of email accounts. This will stop you from deleting surveys for cash messages that you think are personal messages or junk mail. You?ll easily discover the top paying surveys as they arrive if you use a separate email address.

When you complete a paid survey, always supply accurate responses to all questions. If you don?t, you could find yourself blacklisted from future surveys for money. Survey sites that pay regularly compare your responses to similar queries across surveys for symmetry.

Every so often you can find surveys that provide entrance to sweepstakes in place of money. The majority of survey-takers will ignore them because they want money for surveys, but you ought to fill them out because their paltry competition gives you a good chance to win. Rewards contain vacations, appliances, tv sets and substantial cash prizes.

Stay patient and the bonuses will come. If you want the top paying surveys, you will have to finish several others. Many survey websites that pay will only give top paying surveys to people who have successfully filled out some lesser surveys. If you stick with it and build a record with the survey research company, you could be solicited to an online focus group with an allowance of or more per hour.

Your persistence will be rewarded.

Beijing floods unleash online criticism of government (+video)

The heaviest rain in six decades left at least 37 people dead and raised criticism online about Beijing's infrastructure.

By Christina Larson,?Correspondent / July 23, 2012

A car damaged by floods is seen after heavy rainfalls hit Zhou Kou Dian Village, Fangshan district, near Beijing July 22. The Chinese capital's heaviest rainstorm in six decades killed at least 37 people, flooded streets, and stranded 80,000 people at the main airport, state media, and the government said on Sunday.

By Sunday, Pan Anjun, deputy chief of the Beijing flood control headquarters, had tallied the damage. The Chinese newswire Xinhua reported that at least 37 people had died in storm-related damage or events, including 25 who drowned, 6 who were trapped in collapsing buildings, 5 who were electrocuted by fallen power lines, and 1 who was struck by lightning.

Some 500 flights into or out of Beijing Capital Airport were canceled. Reportedly 736 homes were flooded, and 66,000 residents in the hardest-hit areas had been temporarily located, many from the suburban district of Fangshan. At least 31 roads or bridges had collapsed.

All told, Mr. Pan estimated 2 million people were affected. And many of those have taken to online forums to express anger over what they see as ongoing lack of concern for proper construction amid Beijing's pell-mell growth ? as well as for people's needs amid the storm.

On Weibo, China?s Twitter-like social media site, some residents suggested that China?s Meteorological Bureau should have alerted Beijingers to potential dangers through text messages sent via China?s giant state-run telecoms, China Mobile and China Unicom. Of greater Beijing?s roughly 20 million people, roughly 95 percent have cellphones.

The impact of the unusual storm was exacerbated by problems in the municipal drainage system. Beijing?s total urban area has doubled in a decade, from about 700 square kilometers (270 sq. mi.) in 2000 to almost 1,400 square kilometers (500 sq. mi.) in 2010. Many of the city?s newer drains are built to absorb up to 45 millimeters (1.7 inches) of rain per hour, but at several points the volume of Saturday?s storm was much greater.

?When the city hosts big conferences, there are guards at every bridge. But when the big rain comes, there are none,? wrote Dong Lu, the popular sports anchor and commentator.

?We hosted the Asian Games and Olympic Games,? wrote someone on Weibo going by the name Wen. ?We spent billions of yuan to do monumental things. But now after after the heavy rains, we discover that we don't know how to build sewers.?

And as another concluded: ?The secret of Qingdao, a [coastal] city that not afraid of floods? Its drains were built by Germany.?

Pan, the flood control official, estimated the total cost of damages to be about 10 billion renminbi, or $1.6 billion. More than 13,000 vehicle insurance claims have already poured into the China Insurance Regulatory Commission?s Beijing branch.

Kevin Chou contributed to this report.

Toronto Team Building Activities to Make Your Business Team Far ...

Posted by VictorMLeig on Jul 27, 2012 in ADULT JOKES | Comments Off

It is very easy for an office staff to become satisfied. They can fall into a new routine where they will become very independent and rely on his or her fellow workers less and less. While this may seem like an excellent, many office tasks can be accomplished quicker and better when the team does them as a whole rather than relying on the feedback of only one person. If the business is in Toronto, team building activities from a company like XPEERience Group might help create that ?we? perspective again.

This company concentrates on Keynote Speaker Canada activities in several settings. Choosing the proper team building activities is important whenever setting up an event like this as it is important to make certain all staff members are snug with the events. So how can all of this actually incorporate itself back into the office?

Something that a lot of companies will perform is have a staff meeting to discuss your outing the next time your entire staff is together on the job. Keep it very casual and talk about the different events and how the particular winning teams managed to perform so well. Maintain stressing how they employed each person?s strengths to assist the team perform far better.

Once this topic gets rolling, start to bring up examples of tasks around the office which were delayed because the ?team? had not been working together. Keep in mind this is not a disciplinary meeting, merely a reinforcement of how efficient it is to work together. From that point, hand out the same assignment to both of these individuals and teams. Let them have a limited time to develop them and then keep a meeting later within the day to monitor progress.

While there may be some individuals capable of pulling off the upset victory, generally, the teams are able to present a better plus much more complete project. Three Key Negotiation Tactics for Salary Negotiation

8:00 AM By Article Directory

'; div.innerHTML = summary; } //]]> Three Key Negotiation Tactics for Salary Negotiation Three Key Negotiation Tactics for Salary Negotiation

Alright, you have gone in and made the grade with your resume, cover letter and interview. Now the company wants to begin talking about your compensation package. You are now in the driver's seat with respect to negotiating your salary and compensation. Make sure you understand some negotiation tactics so you don't make any mistakes.

At this point you should remember they are very interested in you and they need you. That doesn't mean you should go in with your confidence guns blazing, but rather confidently appreciative about the offer. Let's talk about three key factors that will help you in your salary negotiations and potential offer acceptance.

First, do your homework. If you go to Salary.com you can find out for your job title and location what the average salary will be for that area and function. You need to temper your desire to make lots of money with the going rate of the job title. Beyond that make sure you have a good understanding of what you uniquely bring to the position others may not. You will want to appropriately convey that in your conversations with the other party. Also, you need to have a very good understanding of what you need to live on. Don't accept a salary lower than you can live on, no matter how bad you need the job.

Secondly, calm your mind down. Don't feel that you need to fill every space of silence with words. Many people get into that trap because they feel uncomfortable with pauses and quite moments in the middle of a conversation. Take slow and deep breaths to make sure you take time to think about what you are going to say next, or how you will answer a question. If you don't do this, you may end up moving too quickly and accepting something without thinking about it first.

Thirdly, no matter what do not get frustrated or mad if you don't get exactly what you want in terms of your salary. Remember there are other currencies that are very valuable you need to consider when you are accepting a package. Examples of some other currencies you should consider asking for a gas card, a car, increased paid vacation time, clothing allowance, cell phone, etc. The list goes on and on. A few years ago when I accepted a position with a company I actually negotiated an apartment. So the moral of this story is while you do need to consider the amount you make when you are negotiating, you also want to consider the amount you can save through reduced normal expenses the company will pay for.

One last thing I want to expand on here. It can be so easy to run in and accept an offer less than you really want, especially if you are looking for a job and need to get one fairly fast. Just remember that the easiest time to negotiate a better offer is before you accept it. Don't go in with the attitude you will re-negotiate 6 months or a year down the road. Most likely it will not happen and you will be in a position of being very disappointed.

If you get into a position where the offer is just way too low just politely say you will need to think about it and leave. Give them a time frame you will call back and honor that commitment. It is better to politely and gracefully turn an offer down than accept one that you will be disappointed with 6 months down the road. Good Luck.

(AP) ? Syrian troops rushed dozens of tanks and reinforcements Wednesday toward Aleppo, the country's strategically vital commercial capital, in a bid to crush a rebel advance that has spread to wide swaths of the sprawling city.

As five days of fighting in Aleppo intensified, and with rumors swirling of a final showdown in that city, neighboring Turkey tightened its borders but said refugees will be allowed through.

"We are expecting a big attack on Aleppo," Mohammed Saeed, an activist based in Aleppo, told The Associated Press. "People are worried they might face random shelling while fleeing."

The rebels have made stunning advances over the past week, but the battle for control of Syria, a geographic and political linchpin at the heart of the Middle East, is far from over. And the potential for wider, regional unrest is great.

Israel's foreign minister warned that his country will act immediately if it discovers Islamic militants such as Lebanon's Hezbollah are raiding Syria's chemical or biological weapons stocks.

"For us, that's a casus belli, a red line," Avigdor Lieberman told Israel Radio.

Israeli officials have reported a run on gas masks. Demand has almost doubled in the past few days, to 4,200 requests on Tuesday from a years-old average of about 2,200, said Merav Lapidot, a spokeswoman for the Israeli postal service, which distributes the masks.

On Monday, Syria threatened to unleash its chemical and biological weapons if it faces a foreign attack.

The White House said Wednesday that the Syrian government's assault on Aleppo with tanks and fixed-wing aircraft illustrates what it called "the depth of depravity" by Assad's regime.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the administration has seen "credible" reports about the regime's use of military hardware in Aleppo. Carney said Assad was using its forces to "perpetrate heinous violence" against the city's civilian population.

Carney also pointed to defections by two Syrian ambassadors as an indication that officials in Assad's circle are "fleeing government because of the heinous actions taken by Assad."

Still, after 17 months of fighting and a death toll that activists say has reached 19,000 people, the government remains far better armed than the rebels and willing to launch attacks from the sky, strafing neighborhoods with helicopter gunships. In Aleppo, witnesses also have reported warplanes unleashing sonic booms.

The rebels are disorganized and disparate, unable to communicate on a national level or hold territory for long. After a rebel rush on the capital, Damascus, last week ? including a brazen bombing that killed four regime insiders ? the government routed the fighters by calling in attack helicopters and heavy weapons that devastated entire neighborhoods.

Regime forces followed up the shelling with door-to-door searches in Damascus that were still going on Wednesday to flush out remaining rebel sympathizers.

The escalating bloodshed prompted two more defections by Syrian diplomats Wednesday ? the envoy to Cyprus and her husband, the former ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, according to the opposition Syrian National Council. The announcement follows the televised appearance late Tuesday by Brig. Gen. Manaf Tlass, who confirmed his defection and said Syrians must work together to build a new country.

It was his first public appearance since he left Syria earlier this month. French officials later confirmed that he was in France. Tlass is the son of a former Syrian defense minister.

Turkey's decision to seal its border to trucks Wednesday comes as fears mount that the 17-month-old crisis in Syria will spread. Syria's close ties to Iran and Hezbollah mean that the conflict has the potential to draw in the country's neighbors.

Iran's Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said there are no Iranian troops in Syria and that the Syrian government is capable of confronting terrorists ? the regime's term for its opponents ? the semiofficial Fars news agency reported Wednesday. Vahidi was reacting to reports that accuse Iran of deploying troops in Syria to help quell the armed uprising against Assad's government.

Turkey was a Syrian ally before the uprising began in March 2011, but Ankara is now among the harshest critics of Damascus. Turkish territory along the countries' 566-mile (911-kilometer) border is used as a staging ground for rebel fighters as well as a haven for thousands of refugees. Before the uprising began, the border was the transit point for food and construction materials that Turkey exported to the entire Middle East.

"We have serious concerns over the safety of Turkish trucks regarding their entry and return from Syria," Turkish Economy Minister Zafer Caglayan said, adding that three border crossings were in rebel hands. Syrians seeking refuge or to resupply would still be allowed in.

The battle in Aleppo is just 40 miles (60 kilometers) from the Turkish border. Aleppo is Syria's largest city, with a population of about 3 million.

On Wednesday, Saeed, the Aleppo activist, described fierce battles in neighborhoods all over the city, including some near the center.

Aleppo's historic old city at the center is a U.N. world heritage site.

"Shooting and clashes are going on nonstop," Saeed said.

There are no immediate prospects for international action in Syria or the kind of NATO air campaign that tipped the scales against Libya's Moammar Gadhafi. NATO and the U.N. have all but ruled out foreign military intervention, in part out of fears that it would only make the country's problems worse. The U.S. and its allies have shown little appetite for getting involved in another Arab nation in turmoil.

Russia, Syria's longtime ally and a veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, has ensured that the kind of U.N. resolutions that allowed Western military action in Libya would not be repeated in Syria. On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized new European efforts to enforce an arms embargo as "unilateral sanctions" and a "blockade."

The new commander of the U.N. observer force, Lt. Gen. Babacar Gaye, and the U.N. official for peacekeeping operations, Herv? Ladsous, were in Damascus on Wednesday to assess the prospects for a U.N. peace plan that is being widely ignored.

Half of the 300-member U.N. observer force, meant to monitor the nonexistent cease-fire, has left the country.

"I think diplomats have to be optimistic and that's no joke, I think we have to hope," Ladsous told reporters. "We have to hope that the whole process gains traction, that the vicious circle of violence can cease, and that some political solution and first and foremost some political dialogue can get started."

Bulgaria: Sophisticated conspiracy in suicide bomb

FILE - In this Thursday, July 19, 2012 file photo, a damaged bus is transported out of Burgas airport, Bulgaria, a day after a deadly suicide attack on a bus full of Israeli vacationers. Israel's prime minister said Sunday, July 22, 2012 that his country is on alert for plots to kill more of its citizens overseas, after speculation that last week's deadly bombing of a tour bus in Bulgaria was a rehearsal for a spectacular attack on Israel's Olympics team. (AP Photo/ Impact Press Group)

(AP) ? A sophisticated group of conspirators was involved in the suicide bombing in Bulgaria that killed five Israeli tourists and a Bulgarian bus driver last week, and they spent at least a month in Bulgaria before the attack, the country's prime minister said Tuesday.

Boiko Borisov's comments confirm suspicions that the suicide attacker who targeted a bus filled with Israeli vacationers last Wednesday did not act alone. However, the prime minister didn't say how many people were believed to have been involved in the attack on Israeli tourists in Burgas and also declined to back up Israel's claims that Iran and the militant group Hezbollah played roles.

Those involved used "leased vehicles, they moved in different cities so as not to be seen together, and no two of them can be seen in one place on any security camera," Borisov said, speaking alongside visiting White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan.

He described the people behind the blast as "exceptionally skilled" and said they operated under "strict conspiracy rules." He also said DNA samples from the suicide bomber have been shared with all partner security services, but no match has been found in their databases.

"There was absolutely no chance of preventing such an act of violence," Borisov insisted. "We could have only detected it by chance or if we had been informed by the services that such activities were under way in Bulgaria."

Brennan also stopped short of blaming Iran or Hezbollah, both of which are U.S. nemeses, though he noted both Tehran and the Lebanese group had been implicated in attacks on civilians in the past. He said the U.S. has been working with Bulgaria as the country tracks down those responsible.

"Bulgaria will continue to have the full support of the United States in the weeks and months ahead," Brennan said.

European security officials say that images of the attacker have not yet matched any of their databases but that it's possible the man was not on a watch list.

Investigators know, however, that he was using multiple aliases and was wearing a wig and disguise when he was captured on closed circuit television, according to a European security official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the investigation.

Israel has insisted that Iran and Hezbollah are involved and the country's military chief insisted Tuesday that Israel would respond to the attack.

"We will have to find a way to respond to this attack, and not just a one-off," Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz was quoted as telling the Israeli parliament's foreign affairs and defense committee. "We will know how to do it judiciously. Ultimately, the response will come."

His comments were relayed by a meeting participant who discussed contents from the closed session on condition of anonymity.

Also on Tuesday, Israeli and Bulgarian officials held a memorial ceremony at Burgas Airport to pay tribute to the victims of the attack, with a minute of silence and the playing of the national anthems. Israeli Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov laid a wreath.

Misezhnikov said that some 180,000 Israeli tourists visit Bulgaria each year, and that they will continue coming in the future as well.

Since the attack, however, thousands of Israelis have already canceled plans to vacation in Bulgaria this summer.

Obama campaign says they're not worried over ?you didn?t build that? attacks

President Barack Obama arrives at Boeing Field in Seattle on Tuesday (Elaine Thompson/AP)

President Barack Obama is personally leading an all-out counterattack against the Republican assault over his "you didn't build that" remark, hitting back in his stump speech and in a new television ad as the Democratic National Committee launches a state-by-state response. But that's not because he's worried about the Republican offensive, top strategist David Axelrod insisted on Wednesday.

Republicans have seized on Obama's comments at a Roanoke, Va., campaign event two weeks ago that "If you've got a business?you didn't build that." The context makes clear that the president was saying entrepreneurs need government infrastructure like roads and bridges, investments in education and what Obama called "this unbelievable American system that allowed you to thrive." But the core quote was heaven-sent for Republicans eager to portray the Democrat as hostile or ignorant when it comes to the top issue on voters' minds, the economy. And it quickly made its way into hard-hitting ads.

"I was concerned when I saw the initial ad that it might be impactful. I've concluded that it's not all that impactful," Axelrod said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"But the ad that we did in response got a very good response in the kind of testing that we did," Axelrod said, stressing that Obama's response served to "brush them (Republicans) back" while making the case for his economic policies.

Time will tell. But if Team Obama is truly not worried about this new assault, is the president wasting precious time and money on what has clearly been an escalating response?

Raising funds late Tuesday at the Hunts Point, Wash., home of Costco co-founder Jim Sinegal, Obama took pains to defend himself and recast his comments from two weeks ago.

"I have to tell you, I generally have patience with what the other side says about me. That's the requirement of this job," he began. "And if you don't like folks talking about you, you probably shouldn't run for president."

"The one thing I do have no patience for is this argument that somehow what I'm criticizing is success.?That's an argument you hear from the other side: 'Oh, he wants to punish success.'?I want to promote success," he said.

On Wednesday morning, Republican National Committee Communications Director Sean Spicer diagnosed "a little bit of panic in Chicago right now."

"This comment has clearly struck a chord with the American people," Spicer said, describing Obama's remarks as "talking down the people that we need at this very time to be out there helping to turn this economy around."

And Spicer had a pointed rejoinder to the "out of context" criticisms of the Republican approach, telling CNN: "The context which you're alluding to is that we've got 8.2 percent unemployment, 23 million Americans out of work, and we should be right now encouraging that American spirit of entrepreneurship."

R & R used to mean Rest and Relaxation and was a key part of the American way of life. The new R & R seems to be taking over?Rush and Rapid. Author Keri Wyatt Kent believes this can and should change. In this guest post you?ll get a taste of how and why. In my interview with her we?ll go deeper, inspiring even the busiest person to take a breath and a break.

We live hurried, frantic lives. In our culture, this anxious hurried state has become normal. But do we want to be ?normal??that is, conformed to this world? If we do, we miss out on one of the sweetest gifts God gives: the ability to hear his whispers in our ear.

Some of us stay busy, and live with the hurried heart that comes with that, because we secretly do not want to hear God. We?re afraid he will give us marching orders, send us to Africa, tell us to do something we feel incapable of doing, make us stop having fun.

The calling of God is less often about doing, and more often about knowing. What he longs to whisper in our ear, if we would stop long enough to be still and listen, is that he loves us. He calls us to be transformed by that love. Can you slow down enough to hear the voice that calls you beloved?

Food and Drink: Recipe of the Week - No-Bake Chocolate Peanut ...

No-Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Oat Squares - 1

Being a Mom leaves me very little time for Pinterest (follow us HERE) and recipe searching. One of closest girlfriends is a great pinner so the rare moments I do get on there, I actually head straight to her and see what she's recently pinned (check out her boards HERE) and then I just mooch off of her. For this recipe, that's exactly what I did. I saw it via her recent pins and I knew we had to try it. I've made it twice in the last few weeks and it's been a really big hit, especially with Walt. He's suggested that next time I try to add some more oats, so we'll give that a go.

No-Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Oat Squares

Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter

2 cups white sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar

6 tablespoons cocoa powder

1/2 cup coconut milk

3/4 cup peanut butter

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

3.5 cups oats

1/4 cip chocolate chips

1/4 cup peanut butter chips

Directions:

Line an 8?8 or 9?9 pan with aluminum foil and spray it with cooking spray and set it aside. In a medium saucepan, combine butter, sugars, cocoa powder, milk and heat over medium-high to high heat, stirring to encourage the ingredients to melt and combine.

Once all items have melted and combined, allow the mixture to boil for 90 seconds, stirring continuously. After 90 seconds, turn the heat off and add the peanut butter and vanilla extract (careful when you add the vanilla, it could bubble up a bit on you) and stir until smooth. Then add the oats and stir to coat.

Pour batter into prepared pan, spreading it evenly into the pan. If adding any optional chips to the top of the bars, add them now; pressing them into the mixture lightly with a spatula. Place pan into the freezer and freeze at least 30 minutes, or until bars have set up, before slicing and serving.?

Store extra squares on the counter top, refrigerator, or freeze, plastic-wrap them for use in lunches or snacks.

The original recipe (which we modified a bit) was pinned from Averie Cooks, HERE. She has great suggestions for making this recipe vegan and gluten free too. Check out her site, lots of good recipes, mmm!

No-Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Oat Squares - 2

About to go into the freezer! What I love about this recipe is it literally only takes 10 minutes to make and it contains ingredients that you likely have in your pantry. Win, win!

No-Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Oat Squares - 3

Seriously scrumptious and a perfect treat for a warm summer afternoon.

16GB Nexus 7 sold out on Google Play store in face of high demand

The hottest Android tablet on the market flies off Google's virtual store shelves

With entrenched competitors like the iPad and Kindle Fire, you'd think that a brand new consumer slate would be a hard sell. Well, at least we'd think so. But according to Google's own online store, the company's new Nexus 7 tablet is selling great ? perhaps even a little too well. It seems that sales have been so stellar that the company has had to halt all current orders for the 16GB version of its flagship slate.

Though Google's Android operating system is already well known in the tablet market, the Nexus 7 is the first slate from Google itself, and as such it has been a hotly-anticipated gadget. The 7 runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the latest and greatest version of the mobile OS. As its namesake suggets, the tablet features a 7-inch widescreen display, as well as a powerful quad-core processor, front-facing camera, and near-field communication technology.

The tablet was expected to sell well, especially given its pricing structure ? $199 for the 8GB model, $249 for 16GB ? which is roughly half that of the iPad. Still, the fact that the 16GB model is already sold out shows that even Google perhaps underestimated how well it would be received. If you're interested in the Nexus 7, the 8GB version is still in stock at Google's web store, but if 16GB is what you're after, you'll need to wait until the company replenishes its supply.

Snacking and BMI linked to double effect of brain activity and self-control

ScienceDaily (July 23, 2012) ? Snack consumption and BMI are linked to both brain activity and self-control, new research has found.

The research, carried out by academics from the Universities of Exeter, Cardiff, Bristol, and Bangor, discovered that an individual's brain 'reward centre' response to pictures of food predicted how much they subsequently ate. This had a greater effect on the amount they ate than their conscious feelings of hunger or how much they wanted the food,

A strong brain response was also associated with increased weight (BMI), but only in individuals reporting low levels of self-control on a questionnaire. For those reporting high levels of self-control a stronger brain response to food was actually related to a lower BMI.

This study, which is now published in the journal NeuroImage, adds to mounting evidence that overeating and increased weight are linked, in part, to a region of the brain associated with motivation and reward, called the nucleus accumbens. Responses in this brain region have been shown to predict weight gain in healthy weight and obese individuals, but only now have academics discovered that this is independent of conscious feelings of hunger, and that self-control also plays a key role.

Following these results, academics at the University of Exeter and Cardiff have begun testing 'brain training' techniques designed to reduce the influence of food cues on individuals who report low levels of self-control. Similar tests are being used to assist those with gambling or alcohol addiction.

Dr Natalia Lawrence of Psychology at the University of Exeter, lead researcher in both the original research and the new studies, said: "Our research suggests why some individuals are more likely to overeat and put on weight than others when confronted with frequent images of snacks and treats. Food images, such as those used in advertising, cause direct increases in activity in brain 'reward areas' in some individuals but not in others. If those sensitive individuals also struggle with self-control, which may be partly innate, they are more likely to be overweight. We are now developing computer programs that we hope will counteract the effects of this high sensitivity to food cues by training the brain to respond less positively to these cues."

Twenty-five young, healthy females with BMIs ranging from 17-30 were involved in the study. Female participants were chosen because research shows females typically exhibit stronger responses to food-related cues. The hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle affect this reaction, so all participants were taking the monophasic combined oral contraceptive pill. Participants had not eaten for at least six hours to ensure they were hungry at the time of the scan and were given a bowl containing 150 g (four and a half packets) of potato chips to eat at the end of the study; they were informed that potato chip intake had been measured afterwards.

Researchers used MRI scanning to detect the participants' brain activity while they were shown images of household objects, and food that varied in desirability and calorific content. After scanning, participants rated the food images for desirability and rated their levels of hunger and food craving. Results showed that participants' brain responses to food (relative to objects) in the nucleus accumbens predicted how many potato chips they ate after the scan. However, participants' own ratings of hunger and how much they liked and wanted the foods, including potato chips, were unrelated to their potato chip intake.

This study was funded by the Wales Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience.

What this study shows:

  • Brain responses to food images vary considerably between individuals.
  • Brain responses to food images but not conscious feelings of hunger or desire to eat predict subsequent potato chip consumption.
  • Individuals' reported levels of self-control influence whether this brain response is associated with a higher or lower BMI.

What this study does NOT show:

  • Brain responses to food cues cause overeating.
  • The associations reported here are true in everyone -- only healthy young women were included.
  • Whether our brain response and levels of self-control are learned or innate.
