16GB Nexus 7 sold out on Google Play store in face of high demand

The hottest Android tablet on the market flies off Google's virtual store shelves

With entrenched competitors like the iPad and Kindle Fire, you'd think that a brand new consumer slate would be a hard sell. Well, at least we'd think so. But according to Google's own online store, the company's new Nexus 7 tablet is selling great ? perhaps even a little too well. It seems that sales have been so stellar that the company has had to halt all current orders for the 16GB version of its flagship slate.

Though Google's Android operating system is already well known in the tablet market, the Nexus 7 is the first slate from Google itself, and as such it has been a hotly-anticipated gadget. The 7 runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the latest and greatest version of the mobile OS. As its namesake suggets, the tablet features a 7-inch widescreen display, as well as a powerful quad-core processor, front-facing camera, and near-field communication technology.

The tablet was expected to sell well, especially given its pricing structure ? $199 for the 8GB model, $249 for 16GB ? which is roughly half that of the iPad. Still, the fact that the 16GB model is already sold out shows that even Google perhaps underestimated how well it would be received. If you're interested in the Nexus 7, the 8GB version is still in stock at Google's web store, but if 16GB is what you're after, you'll need to wait until the company replenishes its supply.
