San Francisco, Aug 3:??

The US Justice Department is pressing for the appointment of an anti-trust monitor to supervise Apple store as part of the remedy for the company?s conviction for illegally fixing the price of e-books.

?The court found that Apple?s illegal conduct deprived consumers of the benefits of e-book price competition and forced them to pay substantially higher prices,? Bill Baer, assistant attorney general for the Department of Justice?s Antitrust Division, said in a statement Friday.

?Under the department?s proposed order, Apple?s illegal conduct will cease and Apple and its senior executives will be prevented from conspiring to thwart competition in the future.? The proposal, which was backed by the attorneys general from 33 states, also called for the cancellation of Apple?s agreements with the five major book publishers in the US.

Apple would also be ?prohibited from entering into agreements with suppliers of e-books, music, movies, television shows or other content that are likely to increase the prices at which Apple?s competitor retailers may sell that content,? the statement said.

The proposals follow a July ruling that Apple conspired with major US publishers to illegally raised the price of electronic books.

The anti-trust case was brought by the US Department of Justice which alleged that the company?s late CEO Steve Jobs reached agreements with five of the top six US publishers before Apple introduced the iPad in 2010 in order to sabotage Amazon, which had dominated the e-book market by selling most titles for $ 9.99.

Oger Telecom, the main shareholder in Cell C, South Africa?s smallest operator, has taken a further 3.5 billion rand ($356 million) of equity in the company, which has also arranged a loan of 2.2 billion rand ($224 million).

Cell C has an estimated 16% of a market dominated by two South African giants, Vodafone-controlled Vodacom, which has expanded into sub-Saharan Africa, and MTN which has businesses in Africa and the Middle East.

Robert Pasley, acting CFO of Cell C, told South Africa?s Business Day Live that the have the new bank debt is to refinance existing debt and that the company is not in trouble. The debt is from Nedbank, the Development Bank of South Africa and other banks.

?The investment has been put into the business because our investors have confidence in the business plan and Nedbank, DBSA and some of our other suppliers also have confidence in the business plan,? Pasley told Business Day Live.

Cell C?s main shareholder is Oger Telecom, backed by two Saudi Arabian shareholders, telecoms operator STC and Saudi Oger, a large industrial group with interests from IT to construction. Oger Telecom owns 55% of Turkish incumbent T?rk Telekom, which in turn controls Turkish mobile company Avea.

Cell C?s CEO Alan Knott-Craig founded rival Vodacom but joined the rival company in April 2012. At the time he said that he wanted a 25% share of the South African market.

Twitter Reacts to Hottest NBA Free Agency Rumors Surrounding Mo Williams

Most stars have been plucked from NBA free agency, but there is one Mo guy on the market. The Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat and New York Knicks are fighting over former Utah Jazz point guard Mo Williams, who could boost the teams from playoff-bound to Finals contenders.

Williams is a good shooter, who has put up at least 12.0 points per game for eight consecutive years and has averaged 5.0 assists per game over his career.

Twitter has been full of pitches from fans hoping to woo Williams, who is expected to make his decision any day now. Each team offers Williams something different, from the starting reins, to the limelight, to being Mr. Offense off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies

Williams would need to accept a bench role, but going to the Grizz could be his best move. Memphis is a serious playoff threat, and Williams just spent three days meeting with Grizzlies? personnel, showing his legitimate interest in the team.

Mike Conley isn?t moving out of the starting five, so Williams would be the team?s sixth man, a role he thrived in with the Los Angeles Clippers two years ago.

Adding Williams would allow Jerryd Bayless to compete with Quincy Pondexter as the backup shooting guard, or Pondexter could challenge the recently signed Mike Miller as the reserve 3.

The Grizzlies could use Williams? 38.6 percent career three-point shooting percentage after taking less threes than any other team in the NBA. When Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol get double-teamed in the paint, the big men can kick the ball out to Williams and Miller on the perimeter.

Miami Heat

One of the only holes in the Heat?s roster is at point guard, and Williams was named to the 2009 All-Star team while complementing LeBron James on the Cleveland Cavaliers. The two could reunite if Williams takes his talents to South Beach.

After LeBron left Cleveland, Williams reacted like a high school cheerleader who just got dumped by the homecoming king. They had only been teammates for two years, but Williams told Yahoo! Sports? Mark J. Spears, ?I really sat down and envisioned life after basketball?I really saw myself not playing.?

The Heat?s other weakness is at center, and Miami has been pursuing Greg Oden?s cadaver for much of free agency. If Oden joins the Heat, Williams would need to take around the veteran?s minimum to reunite with LeBron.

New York Knicks

The Knicks need to bolster their point guard corps, as Raymond Felton and Pablo Prigioni are unlikely to duplicate last year?s success. Jannero Pargo, Bobby Brown and Beno Udrih are still on the market, but the Knicks want Williams.

Problem is, the Knicks have already spent most of their money on Amar?e Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler and (sigh) Andrea Bargnani. As Bleacher Report columnist Mike Chiari wrote, New York would only be able to offer Williams a minimum contract, and he could be looking for ?Mo Money.?

Who Will Mo Williams Play For Next Season?

Who Will Mo Williams Play For Next Season?

  • Memphis Grizzlies

  • Miami Heat

  • New York Knicks

  • Other

With Anthony and Stoudemire in the lineup, Williams would be the third or fourth scoring option, still more responsibility than the Grizzlies or Heat would offer. The Knicks have said they will let Anthony pick his teammates next summer to gear up for a title run, meaning Williams could join the next Heat-like dynasty.

My guess is that Williams ends up with the current Heat-like dynasty because of his love for LeBron and the chance to immediately contend for a title. The Knicks are too unstable and can?t pay more than Miami, while Memphis doesn?t have the same established track record.

At 31 years old, Williams is ready to become a role player on championship team rather than a key cog on a fringe playoff squad.

Nanothermometer Takes the Temperature of Living Cells

Researchers have heated specific parts of a cell using laser light and taken temperature readings using nanodiamonds. Image: Georg Kucsko

A tool originally developed for quantum computers can now map temperature changes within a living cell.

The technique exploits quantum effects in tiny diamond crystals, or 'nanodiamonds', to detect changes down to a few thousandths of a degree. The researchers were also able to heat selected parts of the cell using a laser. ?We now have a tool to control temperature on a cellular level, and we can study how biological systems react to temperature change,? says Peter Maurer, a physicist at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a member of the team publishing the result today in Nature.

Diamond has emerged as a useful material for handling quantum information. In classical computing, information is stored in binary digits, or ?bits?, which can be either a 0 or a 1. But a quantum bit, or ?qubit?, can assume both states and an infinite number of states inbetween. Diamond stores qubits in the electron states of impurities in its carbon crystal lattice. The impurities typically comprise one nitrogen atom that has replaced one of the carbon atoms and a single-atom gap, or vacancy, next to the nitrogen.

Researchers have successfully manipulated such nitrogen?vacancy centers ? a step towards using them to perform quantum calculations. And because the nitrogen?s electrons are extremely sensitive to magnetic fields, diamond crystals have also shown promise in magnetic resonance imaging. Such magnetic probes are very sensitive to small temperature fluctuations. But researchers have begun to turn that potential weakness into a strength by using the probes as precise thermometers, and now Maurer and his colleagues have put this tool to work in biology.

Seeing red
For the latest technique, the researchers used a nanowire to inject diamond crystals into a human embryonic cell. They then shone green laser light on the cell, causing the nitrogen impurities to fluoresce with red light.

Variations in local temperatures inside the cell affect the intensity of red light emitted by the nitrogen?vacancy centers. The researchers were able to measure that intensity and use it to calculate the temperature of the corresponding nanodiamond. As diamond conducts heat well, the nanocrystal is likely to be the same temperature as its immediate cellular environment.

The researchers also injected the cell with gold nanoparticles, then trained a laser on them to heat up different parts of the cell. Thanks to their tiny diamond thermometers, they were able to precisely control where the temperature was rising and by how much.

A diamond-based thermometer could be a useful tool in basic biology, Maurer says, noting that a number of biological processes, ranging from gene expression to cellular metabolism, are strongly affected by temperature. For example, biologists could study the development of simple organisms, such as the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, by controlling temperature locally. ?You could heat individual cells and study whether surrounding cells slow down or speed up? their rate of reproduction, Maurer says.

Academy of Motion Pictures Elects African-American Woman as President

Pretty great: Cheryl Boone Isaacs has been elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Yes, The Academy. That Academy. The folks who award Oscars.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes:

Boone Isaacs, a marketing executive who has served stints at Paramount and New Line, is the first African-American to head the 86-year-old Academy and only the third woman to serve as president. Actress Bette Davis held the post for just two months in 1941, and screenwriter Fay Kanin served for four years from 1979-83.

Boone Isaacs has worked as a consultant on films like The Artist, The King?s Speech and Precious, and she's a long-time Academy insider. For years, we've been hearing that Hollywood has a problem with women. Could Boone Isaacs' office ? alongside Kathryn Bigelow's continued success, Katie Dippold's hit screenplay for The Heat, and the fact that Mellody Hobson is chairman at DreamWorks Animation ? mean there's a bit of progress being made?

Maybe. Let's not forget that since the Oscars started in 1929, over 400 Best Director nominations have been given out, and only four have gone to women. Bigelow remains the only woman to have won an Oscar for Best Director. Women buy 50% of all movie tickets but only get 33% of all speaking roles. We have a long way to go.

Macau gross gaming revenue hits MOP29.5 billion in July - Online ...

August 1, 2013

macau-gaming-revenue-to-doubleMacau?s gross gaming revenue continues to flex its proverbial muscles after recording its third best monthly revenue figure in history.

According to data released by Macau?s?Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau,?the gambling town generated MOP29.5 billion in gross gaming revenue in July, a number bested only by March 2013 when revenue hit a record MOP31.3 billion and May 2013 when it reached MOP29.6 billion.

This month?s revenue total is also better by an impressive 20 percent than last year?s figures, proving that more and more people are still flocking the only gambling destination in China to get their gambling juices flowing.

The final revenue total for the month also exceeded analyst forecasts, including Sterne Agee which pegged gross gaming revenue to ?only? hit MOP29.2 billion. Making the month?s total even more impressive was the surge in money coming in the latter part of the month. Gross gaming revenue only stood at MOP12.8 billion in July 14, which meant that in the next 16 days, casinos raked in an impressive MOP16.4 billion.

The MOP29.2 billion total also represents a strong start to the second half of the year for Macau after? the gambling destination posted MOP171.4 billion from January to June, 15.3 percent better than what it did in the first half of 2012. The objective, at least as far as analysts and prognosticators are concerned, now is whether Macau can post an even higher gross gaming revenue total in the second half of the year.

The way things are going ? January to July?s total has reached MOP200.9 billion, 15.9 percent better that its 2012 numbers in the first seven months ? it sounds like nobody should be betting against Macau from hitting that number.

4 Vital System Tools Every Windows User Should Know About

4 Vital System Tools Every Windows User Should Know About

Not sure why your computer keeps crashing? Investigate ? all while getting to know your Windows system better ? using built-in tools that come with Windows. If you?ve been afraid to poke around your system and figure out how to maintain it, don?t fear: it?s simpler than you think.

There are plenty of articles on this very site pointing out third-party tools for maintaining your Windows system. What we occasionally overlook, however, are the tools Windows provides out of the box for doing the same things. Sure, they may be less feature-filled than some of the downloadable options ? but they do the job, and are generally not hard to use. Whether you need to quickly check a friend?s machine for problems or look over your own, knowing where to find tools for scanning your hard drive and memory can?t hurt ? and neither can some basic diagnostic tools.

This list is by no means definitive, but it does point to tools essential for anyone hoping to solve problems on a Windows system.

Task Manager

Is your computer suddenly slow? There?s probably a new, or recently upgraded, app that?s using up way too many system resources. Find out which one it is and shut it down with Task Manager, an app every aspiring Windows expert should learn to use.

What It Does

  • Shows an overview of resource usage, broken down by process.

  • Allows you to force any application to quit, necessary when an application simply won?t close.
  • Shows overall system performance, from CPU to Memory to the network. Perfect if you want to know which bottleneck is slowing down your system ? and what you should perhaps look into upgrading.

  • In Windows 8, allows you to control which apps do and do not load at system startup.
  • In Windows 8, shows you which users are using up the most resources

How To Find It

The easiest way to start up Task Manager, in every version of Windows, is a simple keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Alternatively, you can use Alt + Ctrl + Delete, then select Task Manager.

You?ll also find Task Manager in the Start Menu, under Accessories, for Windows 7 and earlier. Windows 8 users can search for the program using the Search gem.

  • Show which devices currently lack drivers ? yellow question mark icon ? or aren?t functioning properly ? red X icon.
  • Allows you to manually install drivers, if you know where to find them.
  • Attempts to find online drivers for a variety of devices (though this usually doesn?t work)

Where To Find It

Check the Control Panel ? you?ll find Hardware Manager there.?You?ll also find a link by right-clicking My Computer and checking the left panel, at top:

device-manager-shortcut

Believe it or not, the Wikipedia article about Device Manager is quite helpful. You?ll find a list of error codes and more, so check it out if you?re feeling a little lost.

Conclusion

Will this list teach you to solve every Windows problem, ever? No ? there?s not a list on Earth that can do that. Familiarize yourself with these tools, however, and you?ll have a solid start when it comes to diagnosing PC issues. All can be trusted, because all are part of Windows itself ? and tested thoroughly.

Of course, this list isn?t definitive. Can you guys point to any other great tools bundled into Windows? Leave directions for finding them in the comments below, and we?ll continue compiling this list together.
