Cameron, Putin to trade blows, watch Olympic judo

LONDON (AP) ? Prime Minister David Cameron will hold discussions Thursday in London with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but appears likely to focus on boosting trade, rather than anger over Moscow's sheltering of Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime from tougher international action.

With relations thawing since the end of a five-year freeze on top-level contacts between Britain and Russia, Cameron also is planning to take Putin to London's Olympic Park to see matches in the Russian leader's beloved judo competition.

The visit by Putin, an honorary president of the International Judo Federation, will be his first to Britain since he was reinstalled as Russia's chief in May and follows talks with Cameron on the sidelines of May's G-20 meeting in Mexico.

Cameron will push Putin over Russia's refusal to back a new resolution at the United Nations aimed at helping to halt Syria's violence. Britain called the decision by Russia and China to veto a resolution two weeks ago "inexcusable and indefensible."

But, as with much of Britain's frantic round of Olympic diplomacy ? aimed at winning 1 billion pounds (US$1.6 billion) in new trade on the back of the Summer Games, talks will stress efforts to increase the country's exports to Russia.

"We will be at the judo, so it may be a bit off-putting, but nonetheless, I know my major priority is to get those trade deals to get that investment and not to concentrate on what's happening on the mat," Cameron said last week, addressing an audience of business leaders.

Relations between Britain and Russia soured over the 2006 poisoning death of dissident ex-Russian security agent Alexander Litvinenko in London. Litvinenko made a deathbed statement accusing Putin of authorizing his killing.

Russia has refused repeated British requests for the extradition of the chief suspect in the case, ex-KGB agent Andrei Lugovoi, who denies any involvement.

Intelligence cooperation between Britain and Russia remains suspended as a result of Litvinenko's killing.

Leaders of the two countries didn't meet for five years as a result, but in a visit to Moscow last September Cameron acknowledged that the two nations must set aside their disputes to nurture new trading ties.

"This issue hasn't been parked, the fact is that the two governments don't agree," Cameron told reporters.

During that visit, Putin ? then Russia's prime minister ? cast doubt on Britain's aims of strengthening trade links. He said Britain's investments "in the real sector of the economy are rather modest."

Cameron's office said it was not yet known which judo matches the leaders would watch on Thursday.

Tagir Khaibulaev, 28, from Dagestan, and Britain's James Austin, 29, from Burton-upon-Trent, in central England, are both competing Thursday in the men's sub-100kg judo category. Russian Vera Moskalyuk, 30, and Londoner Gemma Gibbons, 25, will fight in the women's sub-78kg category.

Differences in Teens' Coping Styles Affect Social Behaviors | Psych ...

A new study?from the?University of Missouri describes how adolescents? developing personalities and coping habits affect how they act toward others.

Aspects of personality are first displayed as infants relieve stress by crying, turning their heads or maintaining eye contact. Adults tend to manage emotional tension using problem-solving or by seeking support.

?We?re each born with some personality tendencies; for example, we see that babies are fussy or calm,? said Gustavo Carlo, Ph.D., a University of Missouri professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies.

?Those characteristics can change over time as people experience certain events or as a result of their parents, peers or communities. At the same time, as we get older, our personalities become more stable.?

Carlo and his colleagues surveyed 1,557 students ages 12-15 years old in Valencia, Spain. Investigators sought to measure the adolescents? feelings toward others, including empathy and concern for others, their past social and physically aggressive behaviors, their emotional stability and how they manage stress.

Carlo found that empathetic adolescents were more likely to use problem-focused coping, which aims to reduce or eliminate the source of the stress.

Empathetic teens also were more likely to perform prosocial behaviors that benefit others, such as volunteering, donating money or helping friends with problems.

Conversely, emotionally unstable, impulsive adolescents relied more on emotion-focused coping tactics such as venting, avoidance or distraction, and they showed more frequent signs of aggression.

?Empathetic kids are generally very good at regulating their emotions and tend not to lose their tempers,? Carlo said. ?When you?re good at regulating your emotions, you?re less concerned about yourself and more considerate of other people. On the other hand, impulsive children are more self-focused and have difficulty engaging in problem-focused coping.?

Researchers believe that teens will benefit from learning different ways to manage stress. This knowledge will help teens decide which coping techniques to use, based on the situation, Carlo said.

In some cases, people may use both emotion-focused and problem-focused coping, while in others, one might be more beneficial. For example, emotion-focused coping might be more constructive when children witness their parents? divorces because the kids cannot change those situations.

On the other hand, planning ahead to study for tests or complete homework is a problem-focused coping technique that can help adolescents effectively ease academic stress.

?Sometimes we get stuck dealing with stress in one way because it was successful in the past; that coping style may not be effective with other stressors and in other situations,? Carlo said.

?There is more than one way to cope in situations, and people need to know when to apply which coping mechanisms.?

Aerial photos reveal dynamic Greenland ice sheet: Ice sheet has recently retreated then restabilized

ScienceDaily (Aug. 2, 2012) ? Despite the current and rapid melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet, it remains far from certain just when we will have reached a point when scientists will be able to predict its disappearance. Recent research conducted by the University of Copenhagen in conjunction with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Danish National Survey and Cadastre (KMS) in collaboration with an international team of scientists reports that this is not the first time in recent history that the ice sheet has been in retreat and then stabilised again.

The researchers' results have just been published in Science.

Describing the findings, University of Copenhagen Associate Professor Kurt H. Kj?r at Professor Eske Willerslevs Centre for GeoGenetics at the Natural History Museum of Denmark asserts:

"That air temperatures have increased and melting has intensified is relatively well-understood. On the other hand, the UN's climate panel, the IPCC, has for many years called for greater knowledge in relation to the other major effect on the Greenland Ice Sheet -- the 'thinning of the ice sheet' which is the effect of the largest glaciers in Greenland flowing faster into the ocean than previously measured. Over the past three years a number of scientific articles have addressed the issue and pointed to a sea-level rise of one metre or more. These reports presuppose that the melting will accelerate to the same degree as during the past decade. This is a question to which we have been able to provide a qualified answer. It turns out that the ice sheet, in relation to this point, behaves more dynamically and is able to more quickly stabilise itself in comparison to what many other models and computer calculations otherwise predict."

Denmark under water

No less than 240 billion tons of fresh water escape their solid state within the Greenland Ice Sheet and runoff or discharge as icebergs into the world's oceans each year. This amount corresponds to a 5.6 meter annual rise in water level if distributed over the surface area of Denmark, an area of approximately 43,000 km².

Current melting attributable to global warming is so great that some experts warn that we are headed towards an irreversible "tipping point" -- a point at which the global climate is permanently transformed, a point at which low-lying cities and coastal zones around the world will be seriously threatened in 100 years time.

As recently as one year ago this scenario was presented in Copenhagen at a scientific conference organised by the Arctic Council, the University of Copenhagen and Aarhus University, a conference involving over 400 climate researchers from 20 countries.

A problem to be taken more than seriously

Among the somber tones and gloomier outlooks, the recent research findings out of the University of Copenhagen and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in conjunction with an international team of researchers, show that the Greenland Ice Sheet is more robust than researchers have otherwise been able to predict using models and computer-based calculations.

The new research findings were obtained by combining contemporary satellite data with old aerial photographs of the ice sheet in northwestern Greenland, one of two hotspots for ice sheet thinning and heavy glacial melt runoff.

Senior researcher Shfaqat Abbas Khan of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) says of the research results: "We've used a combination of old aerial photographs from the 80's to construct a digital elevation map and recent satellite data. In this way we've been able to gain an overview of the thinning of the ice sheet over the last 30 years in northwestern Greenland. We are the first who have been able to show that the Greenland Ice Sheet was on as a dramatic diet at the end of the 80's as it is today. On the positive side our results show that despite a significant thinning in peripheral regions from 1985-1992; the thinning slowed and then died out."

Old photos

Associate Professor Kurt H. Kj?r of the University of Copenhagen had the idea to create new and comparable elevation models of the ice sheet along a 700 km long stretch of the northwestern Greenland coast using the old photos. This provided researchers with a relatively simple way of revealing more of the ice sheet's secrets in comparison to other new methods.

Kurt H. Kj?r says: "Our results show that the thinning of the ice sheet at the end of the 80's and beginning of the 90's eased over a 4-8 year period, after which a period of stability occurred until 2003. Our conclusion is therefore, that if we judged against longer periods of time, the current thinning of the ice sheet is likely to ease within an 8-year period."

"These variations in the amount of thinning that we are able to document since the 80's make it difficult to predict how much the world's oceans will rise over a longer period of time -- a century for instance -- as a result of Greenland glacial melt-water runoff. However, it is certain that many of the present calculations and computer models of ice sheet conditions that built upon a short range of years since 2000 must be reassessed. It is too early to proclaim the 'ice sheet's future doom' and subsequent contribution to serious water problems for the world. In this context it should be mentioned that the Greenland bedrock rises as the ice sheet in the peripheral regions and especially near the coast is in retreat and becoming thinner. This highlights the enormous forces that are at play in Greenland and of how difficult it is to predict what it means for Greenland as well as the rest of the world," says Associate Professor Kurt H. Kj?r of the Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen.

One of the topics that comes up with new internet entrepreneurs is, "Is it really possible to get paid to take surveys?" The claim that many companies make is that you spend 5 minutes to an hour to complete a survey and get paid for participating.

"What I found is that these companies usually pay far less than minimum wage, when all is said and done. Don't get me wrong, it is possible to get paid just for providing your opinion, but I wouldn't quit your day job."

Robert found that it's hard to find consistent surveys to take, even if you're signed up for more than one site. He says, "Generally, you'll only qualify for 1 out of maybe 10 surveys, or less. There really are better ways to spend your time, if you want to make money online."

As end of transition nears, Somalis pray for peace

Sitting outside a dilapidated building in Mogadishu's heavily fortified government area, Ali Hussein waves his hand dismissively at talk of Somalia's notoriously fractious political elite.

"It is all corruption, all stealing, all fighting," Hussein, who says he is over 60 and unemployed, spits out in stuttering English.

"The president, all of them, they are just militia, militia, militia."

Now though -- as the weak Western-backed government approaches the end of its mandate on August 20 --- it is down to these same politicians to grasp what many say is the war-torn nation's best chance for peace in years.

Billed as the key to lifting anarchic Somalia out of two decades of civil war, the end of the transitional period comes as regional and African Union forces have wrested a series of key strongholds from Al-Qaeda linked Shebab insurgents.

In the capital Mogadishu, Somalis are seizing upon the emergence of relative peace, with the streets bustling with shoppers and embryonic traffic jams forming around the city.

Dangers remain. Two suicide bombers blew themselves up on Wednesday outside the gates of a special assembly to endorse a draft constitution, seen as a key stage in the fragile political process.

With the government's mandate already extended twice, the international community -- desperate for political gains to match military successes -- is pushing for the complicated process to be completed by an August 20 deadline.

However, this is just one of over a dozen attempts to find a lasting solution, and with Somalia still not stable enough to hold elections, it will be unelected elders who select the parliament, that will in turn choose a new president.

UN Special Representative for Somalia Augustine Mahiga has warned of "disturbing reports" of "bribery and intimidation" by the political elite to wreck the process to select supporters to staff the new parliament as lawmakers.

After years of infighting and minimal progress, Somalis are sceptical that their venal leaders are up to the task, and fear the process will see rampant bribery and the current crop of corruption-tainted officials returned to power.

Many believe the political merry-go-round will change nothing for the ordinary people, struggling for survival in grim conditions.

"Initially, the hope was that a change of government would rotate out some of the less desirable politicians and help create a truly representative and more effective 'permanent' government," said EJ Hogendoorn, from the International Crisis Group thinktank.

"This will most likely not occur, as a small group of politicians have hijacked the roadmap process."

One of those who has been tipped to remain in power is current President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, along with parliament speaker, Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan.

Both are linked to corrupt deals by a leaked UN report.

President Sharif has denied the accusations, saying those behind them are opposed to Somalia's recovery, and claims progress -- however small -- has been made in the more than three years he has been in charge.

"We've started the rebuilding of government institutions, and today you can go to any ministry and visit them in their own offices," Sharif told journalists at a recent press conference, an expensive-looking watch glinting on his wrist.

Whoever ends up in charge -- and the likelihood appears that the August 20 deadline will not be met -- the job of cementing Somalia's rocky peace remains a mammoth task.

Despite the collapse of earlier efforts -- plus the fact a new government will remain just as weak, unable to deliver even the most basic of services to most of the country -- UN officials have optimism.

"The biggest strength is the people of Somalia, they are tired of violence, and they have tasted peace and stability," added Mahiga.

Waiting in the departure lounge of Mogadishu airport for his flight back to his family in Uganda's capital Kampala, Muhamud Hassan turns to watch another plane cross the runway.

"The diaspora, so many are coming back to have a look and see what the situation is like," he says, clucking with sympathy as he catches sight of a TV screen showing news footage of the latest fighting in Syria.

"Look at Damascus, that is what Mogadishu used to be like, but now it is beautiful here, it is peace."

Hassan, who fled Somalia to Uganda some five years ago, is one of those who came back to check how things are progressing, spending three months here looking into setting up a fruit and vegetable business.

He is praying that disputes over jobs among the political elite will not tip the city back into conflict, but is not yet certain enough to bring his wife and 10 children back to their home city.

"Sheikh Sharif or a new president, I just hope that peace stays," he said.

"For my family, maybe I wait another year, then if it is still ok it may be possible for them to come back too."
