HAMMOND, Ind. ? The Purdue University Calumet men?s basketball team used several big plays down the stretch to pull out a 79-78 victory over Trinity International on Saturday afternoon inside the Fitness and Recreation Center. The Peregrines improve to 7-19 overall and 4-8 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference with the win.
Trailing by three points with just 1:21 left in the contest, Purdue Calumet stepped up to the challenge. Andrew Anderson made a pair of huge plays on back-to-back possessions to erase the deficit and put PUC on top 77-76, as he knocked down a jumper in the paint before coming up with a big steal and the ensuing pair of free throws just seconds later.
The Peregrines would force a turnover the next trip down the floor, as TIU would need to foul to prevent PUC from running out the clock. Noah Allen knocked down one-of-two from the line with 38 ticks remaining in the game, before the Trojans knotted the contest just 13 seconds later on Daniel Metzelfeld?s jumper in the paint.
The Black and Gold would hold the ball for the last shot of regulation, when Anderson was able to get good penetration and draw a foul with just one second left on the clock. The 6-foot-3 junior, who knocked down his previous 11 free throw attempts in the game, sank his first attempt to put PUC on top for good. Trent Tucker would snatch the miss on Anderson?s second try to seal the win.
Purdue Calumet drained an impressive 27-of-31 from the charity stripe in the game, but it was the turnovers that would really be the difference. The Peregrines forced a season-high 35 turnovers in the game, scoring 36 points off the Trojans? mishaps. PUC shot just 33.8 percent from the field in the contest, while TIU knocked down 55.3 percent of their shots including 11 three-pointers.
Anderson tied a career-high with 26 points to lead all scorers, as he also added four assists and a pair of steals. Drew Ridlen knocked five shots from beyond the arc on his way to a 19-point effort, while Alex Richman added 16 points and three steals. Ty Miller came off the bench and ripped down a career-high 12 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive glass.
PUC looked to be easing their way to victory midway through the first half, as it exploded with a 30-13 run to take a commanding 43-25 advantage late in the period. TIU?s TJ Abrams would go on to hit one of his team-high five three-pointer with a shot at the buzzer, but the Peregrines would still head into the break with a 15-point lead.
Purdue Calumet saw its lead grow to as much as 19 in the final stanza, before Trinity International silenced the crowd at the FRC with a 29-10 run over an eight minute span to take a 71-66 lead with five minutes left. The two teams would trade baskets for the next few minutes, before Anderson helped lift PUC to its seventh win of the year.
The Black and Gold will return to the hardwood this Wednesday, February 15, when they hit the road to face Trinity Christian. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
