The plumbing system in your home can be considered the home?s circulatory system. There are pipes running through the entire home, with many places that conceal the pipes such as under the floors and behind the walls. In these pipes, water is carried to the plumbing fixtures and away the plumbing fixtures. As well, wastewater is carried out of the home through a series of drain pipes. Because the plumbing system is an important part of the home, every homeowner should know how the plumbing technology works.
Plumbing technology is based on gravity and pressure. In the home, the plumbing system consists of two separate systems. There is no overlapping between the two systems. One system is involved with bringing clean water into the home while the other system carries wastewater out of the home. The water coming into the home has to be under pressure in order for it to be transported through the pipes that are distributed throughout the home. The water goes through the pipes to the fixtures such as the faucets, showerheads, and toilet tank. When the water comes into the home, it travels through a water meter that records the amount of water being used. In most cases, the water can be shut off at the main water shut off valve which is normally located near the water meter. For emergencies such as a burst pipe, homeowners will immediately close the main shut off valve. There are also normally stop valves located near the fixtures that can be turned off instead shutting off the entire water system at the main water shut off valve.
The cold water is ready to be used when turning on a fixture. The hot water requires a water heater tank that will hold and heat the water. There is a thermostat located on the heater which tells you the temperature of the hot water. The normal temperature of home water heater is 50 degrees Celsius, but it can be between 60 degrees Celsius and 70 degrees Celsius.
When it comes to sewer drainage, the wastewater does not rely on pressure to travel out of the home. The drainage systems all move downward at various angles and curvatures. Gravity pulls the wastewater downward out of the home and to the septic tank. At the septic tank, the waste water is cleansed and the clean water is dispersed back into the ground water table. At the fixtures, there are vent traps that stops sewer gas leaks because it can be hazardous if a leak does develop.
The plumbing system is a very complex and fragile system of pipes and important components such as vents, traps, and cleanouts, that require special care. There are simple home repairs one can perform such as plunging a toilet or clearing a clogged drain, however, it is important to make sure you know what you are doing before attempting a repair. For serious repairs such as burst pipes and backed up septic tanks, it is important to enlist the services of a professional plumber.
